Algerian gas and Europe: Medgaz, demand and the limits of replacing Russian gas
Why Algerian gas matters to Europe without being able to replace Russian gas by itself.

Editorial update: research completed on 21 July 2026 at 14:35 (Africa/Casablanca).
European demand for Algerian gas is back in focus because the European Union is continuing its Russian gas phase-out while remaining exposed to global LNG markets. Algeria is not a full replacement for Russia, but it remains an important regional supplier, especially through pipeline gas to southern Europe.
Key points
- Eurostat places Algeria as the EU s second supplier of gaseous natural gas in Q1 2026, behind Norway.
- ACER says the Russian gas phase-out requires diversification without removing price risk.
- Medgaz remains strategic for Spain, but capacity is limited.
Why Algeria matters
European interest in Algeria rests on three factors: geographic proximity, existing pipelines and contract experience with European clients. That does not turn the country into a miracle supplier. A credible reading must hold together Algerian strengths and the physical limits of an energy system that depends on investment, maintenance and contractual predictability. Europe between diversification and prices
The European Commission and the Council have set a gradual path away from Russian imports. That path does not remove exposure to global markets: it shifts it towards LNG competition, spot prices, maritime tensions and storage seasons. Algeria can help diversification, but Europe will still need several suppliers.
Medgaz as symbol and constraint
Medgaz is a symbol because it connects Algeria directly to Spain. It is also a constraint because a pipeline has fixed capacity. Serious energy diplomacy therefore speaks about realistic additional volumes, contracts and operational security, not slogans about total replacement of Russian gas.
What to watch

FAQ
Can Algeria replace all Russian gas?
No. It can contribute to European diversification, but capacity and contracts limit any total substitution.
Why is Medgaz important?
Because it links Algeria directly to Spain and reduces some transit risks.
Does LNG solve everything?
No. It diversifies sources but exposes Europe more to global prices and maritime tensions.
